Hayfield Pub Guide 2008

The local pubs, like the Cricket Club, form an integral part of the village life. Every Pub has its own character, some lively, some quiet, some sporty and some quaint!

We invite comments from the local landlords where possible, preferably amusing. If not we have to make it up! Do not take the comments too seriously, its only fun!

The Kinder Lodge - "Probably the Best Ale House in Hayfield" [Graham, Landlord]

The Royal Hotel - "Forget Probably, we are the Best Ale House" [David, Landlord]

The Waltzing Weasel - Under new management

The Lantern Pike - Under new management

The Bulls Head - Gee whiz, the Bull is for the young at heart! [Phil Gee, Landlord]

The George Hotel - Hayfield's Second Oldest Pub! [Corrected by the Bull]

The Sportsman - No comment offered!

The Packhorse - Under new management

Now then, a question for the Historians.

Can you name the pubs the village has lost?

There was:

The Toll Bar Inn, on the corner of Swallow House Lane,

The Wood Inn, next door to Hallam's Garage, New Mills Road,

The Junction, on Church Street, now the Memorial Garden,

The Grapes at Little Hayfield, first house on the right going into Little Hayfield.

The Bridge, Market Street, where the bank is now.

The New Inn, now the Lantern Pike

And what happened to the Railway and the Birch Hall? E-mail the answers!

Excellent set of answers  given by Phil Gee Landlord of the Bull...

Railway is now Kinder Lodge and Birch Hall is Waltzing Weasel and the Lantern Pike was the New Inn.

The Bulls Head Inn is the oldest pub in the Village starting life as the Brewhouse Inn  accommodation for the church circa 1396  became known as the Bulls Head when Henry the 8th  took these ecclesiastical Inns out of church ownership (that's why there are many Bulls Heads next to churches)
